William Henry Finlay

Finlay discovered 5 IC objects with the  7" Merz refractor (installed 1879) of the Cape Observatory in 1883-87; see: Finlay, W. H., Nebulae observed at the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope, MNRAS 58, 329 (1898), containing also objects found by Innes. Due to the late publication Dreyer could only include them in the Second Index Catalogue (1908). IC 4407 in Virgo is lost ("not found"), probably due to an incorrect "circle reading" of the coodinates and IC 2949 is only a pair of stars. Two objects are galaxies in Grus: IC 5267 and IC 5240. The latter was re-discovered later by Swift in 1897 (and probably by Thomé). The globular cluster IC 4606 in Scorpius is identical to Herschel's NGC 6144.
