Valentiner was Schönfeld’s successor at Mannheim Observatory. He later moved to Karlsruhe and worked at the Königstuhl Observatory, Heidelberg. He studied the open cluster NGC 6633 in Ophiuchus, discovered by de Chéseaux about 1745.
