Though the Magellanic Clouds bears the name of Magellan, becase of his sighting in 1521, they were seen 20years earlier by Amergio Vespucci; see: Dekker, E., The Light and the Dark: A Reassessment of the Discovery of the Coalsack Nebula, the Magellanic Clouds and the Southern Cross, Ann. of Sci. 47, 529-560 (1990). Only the Small Magellanic Cloud is in the NGC. The other one was too large for Dreyer to include it in the catalogue.
